Course Overview
This class is virtual. RSVP via Eventbrite and we will send instructions and appropriate links for you to join via the email you provide per guest in your registration. Instructions will be sent approximately one hour before the event begins.
Join us for Designing Video Games for Social Impact! In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of game design, get an introduction to organizing for social change, and design your own social impact video game. Video games that do not only entertain but affect social good through their narrative, gameplay, and real-world calls to action.
By the end of this course, you will:
- Understand and apply theory, craft, and art of game design.
- Understand and apply tenets of organizing for social change.
- Apply the art of narrative storytelling for gaming and match social impact missions to video game mechanics and story elements.
- Analyze social impact games like Papers Please (Immigration), Sky: Children of Light (Compassion & Community), Papo y Yo (Child Abuse), That Dragon, Cancer (Cancer Awareness), Flower (Environmental Awareness), Florence (Relationships, Loss), and Salaam (Refugee Crises).
- Create an interactive game design document (GDD) for your original social impact video game.
Your Instructor
David Negrin is a Professor, VR Creator, Screenwriter, and Arts Non-profit Founder. He is Assistant Professor of Film, Television, and Emerging Media at Ithaca College. He was Executive Director of the NYC Screenwriters Collective, the largest non-profit screenwriting workshop in New York City. He is Host of ‘The Script’ Podcast and moderator of @ScriptFeed.
Course Schedule
This mini course takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays starting on December 7th and finishing on December 14th.
The classes are held from 6:00 – 8:30 PM ET. They are hosted online on Zoom. All students will receive instructions on how to sign in approximately one hour before the first class begins.
This course is live and online.
